Coffee Lingo

Some of the most frequent questions Fresh Joe receives involve the confusion coffee drinkers are faced with in ordering coffee drinks or making them at home.

Viennese or Turkish? Espresso or Latte? Read the information below and in no time, you'll be slinging the "Coffee Lingo."

Café Au lait: Popular in France, this drink consists of equal amounts of fresh brewed dark roasted coffee and hot milk.

Café latte:
Popular in Italy, this drink consists of 1/4 freshly brewed espresso and 3/4 hot milk.

Cappuccino:
This coffee drink is made with freshly brewed espresso mixed with steamed milk. This is usually done in equal parts. Topped off with the foam from the steamed milk and dusted with cinnamon or sweetened cocoa powder.

Espresso:
A dark, rich, and full-bodied brew made by quickly forcing hot water and steam through finely ground and firmly compressed espresso or Italian Roast beans. Because of its strong flavor, it is often served in small quantities. It is always served black.

Mochaccino: Espresso and steamed chocolate milk in equal parts. Top with foam from the steamed chocolate milk.

Mexican Coffee:
Coffee brewed with cinnamon and brown sugar and mixed with cocoa. This is served hot with whipped cream.

Turkish Coffee:
A thick, syrupy coffee served in Turkey and the Middle East. Finely ground dark roasted coffee is brewed three times with water, sugar, and spices. The result is a strong but not bitter tasting coffee, traditionally served in small cups for sipping.

Viennese Coffee: A combination of melted chocolate and brewed strong coffee that is whisked until frothy and served with sweetened whipped cream. In Austria it is usually served topped with grated chocolate.
