Coffee Lingo
Some of the most frequent questions Fresh Joe receives involve the confusion
coffee drinkers are faced with in ordering coffee drinks or making them
at home.
Viennese or Turkish? Espresso or Latte? Read the information below and
in no time, you'll be slinging the "Coffee Lingo."
Café Au lait: Popular in France, this drink consists of equal
amounts of fresh brewed dark roasted coffee and hot milk.
Café latte: Popular in Italy, this drink consists of 1/4 freshly
brewed espresso and 3/4 hot milk.
Cappuccino: This coffee drink is made with freshly brewed espresso
mixed with steamed milk. This is usually done in equal parts. Topped
off with the foam from the steamed milk and dusted with cinnamon or
sweetened cocoa powder.
Espresso: A dark, rich, and full-bodied brew made by quickly forcing
hot water and steam through finely ground and firmly compressed espresso
or Italian Roast beans. Because of its strong flavor, it is often served
in small quantities. It is always served black.
Mochaccino: Espresso and steamed chocolate milk in equal parts.
Top with foam from the steamed chocolate milk.
Mexican Coffee: Coffee brewed with cinnamon and brown sugar and
mixed with cocoa. This is served hot with whipped cream.
Turkish Coffee: A thick, syrupy coffee served in Turkey and the
Middle East. Finely ground dark roasted coffee is brewed three times
with water, sugar, and spices. The result is a strong but not bitter
tasting coffee, traditionally served in small cups for sipping.
Viennese Coffee: A combination of melted chocolate and brewed
strong coffee that is whisked until frothy and served with sweetened
whipped cream. In Austria it is usually served topped with grated chocolate.
